Small Business….nothing but changes ahead

Changes have now started for small business and their employees. What was initially implemented for medium to large business, are now law for small business.

So what’s changed?

The right to disconnect now applies (from 26 August 2025) to all employees currently employed by a small business.

The right to disconnect gives employees the right to refuse to monitor, read or reply to contact (or attempted contact) outside their working hours, unless doing so is unreasonable. This includes contact (or attempted contact) from an employer or a third party.

Employers are encouraged to discuss contact out of hours and set expectations that are suitable for both the workplace and the employee’s role. To learn more about the right to disconnection click here

Another change that now applies to small business relates to the employment of casual employees. From 26 August 2025, eligible casuals employed by a small business can issue a notice to their employer (in writing) to change to full-time or part-time employment under the employee choice pathway. There are rules you need to follow when making or responding to a notice.
